| Don't let the August 9 date fool ya! August 8, 2008 will still be our official wedding date. Because of the lunar calendar and conflicts with honoring ancestors, we are unable to hold the banquet until Saturday, Aug 9. (Or we'll be cursed for the rest of our marriage, I think.) But Western dates don't seem to apply to the curse, so we will be having a civil ceremony at City Hall to get that 888 date stamped on our marriage license. Any of you who'd like to join us for that are welcome, although I will have to double-check on how many people can come to that sort of thing. It will be very simple, but I'm sure I'll be in white. History on the chosen date (for those I haven't told): Besides the obvious brilliance of having the numbers line up--888, 777, 666 (uh, not so much that one...), eight is the lucky number in Chinese culture. Pronounced "bā," it sounds like "fā," which means "fortune." Having multiples of the number together is akin to having your fortune multiplied. (So if you see a car with a vanity plate that has 888 in it, most likely, they're Chinese!) More importantly (to me), eight ("bā") also sounds like "bà," which means "father." In Taiwan, Father's Day falls on August 8. My father passed away in 2001 (so long ago, and yet, no so long ago) and it was Tommy's idea to actually wait for 888 in order to honor my dad and his memory. So for me, it's not only an interesting date in the general sense (I can't imagine how many other Chinese couples will be marrying on that date... not to mention the Olympics in Beijing!), or even a date in memory of dad, but that it was a decision made by Tommy that shows his loving commitment to me and my family. Dad had only met Tommy when we were casual friends, so he didn't really get to know him. But I think he'd like him well enough... :) | |
